Dia de los Muertos Cookies

Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead is one of Yvette's favorite holidays and I found these really awesome 3d printed cookie cutters that I wanted to try to make/use for this past holiday. The prints took approximately an hour collectively and are a boy and girl sugar skull.

I used the following recipe for cookies from my mom's cook book.

-1 cup sugar
-3/4 cup shortening (part margarine or butter. softened)
-2 eggs
-1 teaspoon vanilla
-2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
-1 teaspoon baking powder
-1 teaspoon salt

"Mix sugar, shortening, eggs and vanilla. Stir in flour, baking powder and salt. Cover and refrigerate at least 1 hour.

Roll Dough 1/8 inch thick on lightly floured cloth-covered board. Cut into desired shapes with cookie cutters. Place on ungreased cookie sheet. Heat oven to 400 degrees. Bake until cookies are delicate golden brown, 6 to 8 minutes. About 4 dozen 3-inch cookies. "

The cookies turned out great, and taste even better! In fact these cookies were made 11/3/15 and only 4 remain 11/4/15!

But now on a serious note, Pete Prodoehl, author of http://rasterweb.net/raster/ shared some information on PLA plastic and how it pertains to sanitation. Take a look at the below link to find out more.

In summary, PLA plastic should only be used minimally(if at all) for food utensils or anything that needs to be clean. The reason is that even when the part is cleaned, the layers created during the printing process provide tiny little cavities and crevices for bacteria to grow.

That being said, I guess I will be retiring these cutters and print another set next year.

Sadness.
