MakeShift: Concrete Mixer

This past Thursday was our first MakeShift of the new year featuring concrete projects, spiked milkshakes, and plenty of snacks! In fact this month's MakeShift was the best turnout to date with more than 40 people who got their hands dirty making concrete planters, vacuum formed molds, and folding paper into geometric forms.

Of course, the 3D printers are always a big draw. Here Joe Dorn is explaining how they work to two very inquisitive guests!

Adrian, member of the Milwaukee Makerspace, seen above on the left was quickly put to work helping the guests create a mosaic tile. He was a huge help this night, as well as past Betty Brinn and Maker Faire events. Thanks for the help Adrian!

Guests were invited to break all these plates and mugs, courtesy of value village and Betty Brinn employees for bringing in unwanted porcelain dishware. What a great way to relieve stress!

The employees of the museum put in countless extra hours prototyping and creating this table of cement prototypes, materials samples, and planters to get the creative minds of our guests flowing.

At about 7:00 we began to invite our guests to start making a form to take home with them.

And they were off! The creativity of this group of people was contagious. I saw guests helping each other and offering help with their 'one-of-a-kind' artwork. It was exactly what we hoped to see.

And then the vacuum former came out. All of our guests had great ideas of items to turn into molds. Above and below you can see our guest, Eric, found some props from the Sendik's area to vacuum form and then cast in concrete. Looks like one of our visitors will be making a concrete fruit bowl!

Other items that I saw being vacuum formed included: bottles, pots, fruit, goggles, drafting squares, and countless others!

Bill Pariso is always willing to lend a helping hand with our visitors. He was the primary employee involved in all the material research and could be found running back and forth mixing concrete for the guests.

And of course who could forget the 'Puppy Bowl' Stadium filled with snacks and treats. It is Super Bowl weekend after all.

Stay tuned to see what other fun activities we do at the next MakeShift Event!
