Loteria Block Prints - Pt. II

I always have to keep myself busy, sometimes so much so that I forget to document! Here is some work that I have been doing on the Loteria series.

I am using transfer paper to transfer all the text onto the cards one by one. The transfer paper I am using is a graphite film, but there are others made from inks that would have sufficed.

I rough out the general "look" that I am going for, but I know throughout the carving process my actual design might change. For those that are looking to get into wood block carving, I wouldn't let the fear of "making a mistake" deter you. I will be the first to admit that on every block I carve I know I will make a mistake. It is how you deal with those mistakes though that ultimately decides how well your carving turns out. Don't give up, see it through to the end.

Notice on the above carving that there are god awful patches revealling the plywood underneath? Well this is what happens when you buy cheap plywood from Home Depot. I have since learned that there is a product called "bendable ply" available that the top layer is super thick, unlike this thin veneer that I am battling against.

Stay tuned!
