Camera Obscura: Maker Faire Milwaukee Preview Event

The Camera Obscura was first displayed to the public at the Maker Faire Milwaukee preview event earlier this month. Other attractions included the Curiosity Cube, a Dalek from the show Dr. Who, Magnetag, and a few others.

Throughout the event it was rainy and overcast, but Joseph Mougel, Lainey Koch, and I stayed outside and photographed families from about 9-4pm.

Because this was the first event which also meant that it was the first time we ever used the camera, we had to develop a way of communicating between the person trapped inside the camera and the operator of the camera lens. For this event we developed a "knock system" which two knocks would mean to close the camera lens, and the next two knocks would be that the camera is ready to shoot the photograph.

As you could imagine this system was problematic because if anything shifted out of adjustment then we would be left with an out of focus image. We had a handful of families stop by and get photographed but ultimately the cold weather kept most families playing in the museum. Hopefully we will have better luck at the next event.

Stay tuned!
