Reskinning the Camera Obscura Trailer

I am so excited to share this story with you all. The Betty Brinn Children's Museum was awarded a 2017 Arts board grant in order to take our original camera obscura (created at Maker Faire 2016) and push it even further!

That's right folks, the new and improved camera obscura will be constructed from a trailer and taken to different neighborhoods around the city in order to take photos of individuals and families. All of the photos taken at the different outreach events will then be assembled into an exhibition called City Neighbors and put on display at the Betty Brinn Children's Museum and then travel to State Faire Park September 23 and 24 to be on display for Maker Faire 2017!

But before we can actually shoot photographs with this trailer camera, we have to address some major issues with the trailer. For instance one of the side of the trailer was really rotted out and all the carriage bolts were completely seized with rust so I called in a little muscle from work. Jason and Austin were so gratious to help replace the rotted panel and prep the trailer for paint.

It took a long time to remove the rotted panel out of the trailer with minimal tools. If I remember correctly after we muscled out the panel we had to use two channel lock pliers to basically break the carriage bolts out to get the new panel in.

Here is the trailer in all of its original glory...

The rust stained the exterior of the trailer.

Special thank you goes out to Jason and Austin for all of your help prepping the trailer, painting, and painting the awesome logo on the side!

After a long day at work we finally got the new panel in. Next steps are cutting a hole in the front to use as our aperture, paint the interior black, seal all light leaks, and a few other things to turn this trailer into a working camera.

Stay tuned to see what happens next!

Shameless plug, I hope to see everyone at Maker Faire Milwaukee this year. Stop by the camera obscura and get your very own tintype portrait! Mention that you have been following my blog and make my whole year, I would be so happy and would love to hear what you think of the project!
